Albania's entry
by Thomas Ledegang
For decades the European Union has been seen as a beacon of stability and prosperity for nations seeking to overcome their unfortunate and troubled pasts. This is where Albania comes into play. Albania is nestled in the centre and the heart of the Balkans and is getting closer to EU membership. Albania's journey is not only about geopolitics, but also a deeply personal and life changing aspiration for its people.
Through the eyes of a friend
I freshly recall my first interaction with an Albanian in the city that I live in. In the city there is a minority of Albanians that are firmly together and want the best for each other and the country of their heritage. I grew up with Albanian children and people praising their own country, even though it went through some hard times.
I had met Seef, a man I Had known for a while through football, who had grown up and spoke passionately about his dream of joining the EU. “It’s not just about the economic aspect,” he said: “But about being seen as equal and modern. Because still the Balkans are seen as old countries that are yet to be fully revolutionized, And the candidacy of Albania shines hope on the Economic and Social sides of the country and its citizens. Even so, challenges remained; corruption and public service inefficiencies still loomed large.
History opposes Albania
Albania's candidacy, officially recognized by the EU in 2014, has been a journey of perseverance. Significant reforms, within the country, especially in the judiciary and the efforts against corruption, have been the requirements handled for the accession. However, some EU member states have been skeptical about the accession of Albania with concerns about if the sustainable reform within the country can persist, as cohesion is seen as a big element for a candidate member to join according to the enlargement conditions. (Conditions For Membership, 2012)
Despite these challenges, the chance for EU membership represents immense potential for Albania. It will offer economic opportunities, increased investments from EU countries and more accessibility and mobility for its citizens. For the Union it is more than just a commitment, it is a key element to strengthen the influence in the Balkans, countering possible Eastern countries like Russia and China, that want to expand their influence in the Balkan Region
Hope for the future
As Albania keeps being a candidate, the EU must remain an active partner for the country, setting up clear goals and providing support. Albania however must sustain its commitment to their reforms, ensuring every benefit of membership to the EU reaches the whole country.
Seef's dream and that of so many Albanians, is alive. A dream not just joining the European Union, but of building a stronger future together for their beautiful nation.
