The UK's entry

by Thomas Unglaub

The articles in this collection explore the future of Europe, tackling topics that range from background articles to comparative essays. These articles reflect my perspectives and analyses on the challenges, opportunities, and transformations shaping the whole of Europe in the 21st century.

This project was inspired by ongoing debates about European unity, governance, and identity in an era of rapid global change. While I strive for accuracy and balance, these writings also incorporate subjective interpretations. Readers are encouraged to view them as starting points for deeper reflection and dialogue.

Special thanks go to the scholars who helped me put this website on which views our political mindset towards Europe!

Thank you for joining me in examining the path ahead for Europe!

The enlargement of Europe is mainly focused in this day and age on the Western Balkans, Moldova, Ukraine, and Georgia. The reasoning for these countries is, specifically Ukraine, with the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia that it has intensified Europe’s interest towards integrating them. Regarding the United Kingdom and the case of BREXIT, they are no longer bound towards European membership. The expansion of the EU could expose questions about the United Kingdom’s role in Europe and its policies.

Influences from elsewhere

When looking at the geopolitical stand, the United Kingdom shares the idealization of stabilizing the Western Balkans because of countering Russian influence in Eastern Europe. Also, the United Kingdom supports European expansion because it aligns with the United Kingdom’s interest of creating a secure and constantly evolving Europe. However, being a non-member of the European Union, the United Kingdom has a harder way to navigate through the shaping of Europe’s future.

With the constant expansion of Europe, it shows that Europe is constantly evolving and interconnected. While the United Kingdom has chosen to get out of the European Union, its norms and values cannot afford to ignore the implications of EU enlargement.

Possible rearrangements

But how does the United Kingdom approach this? A possible approach could involve independence with cooperation and showing that the United Kingdom’s ideals and aspects like security and the influence they have are closely tied to the stability and overall success of Europe as a whole. Europe’s expansion does offer an opportunity for the United Kingdom to show and define its role towards Europe. Not as a member of the European Union, but as an ally of the EU and that they are committed to helping to achieve the common goals regarding changing the world.

Regarding this evolving context, the United Kingdom must choose whether it will remain an observer of everything or take plans into account for the shaping of Europe’s future. This choice will determine the legacy and reflection the post-BREXIT era has on the world. Showing its place into the current European identity.
